Enhance Your Fertility with Aromatase Inhibitors

Aromatase inhibitors are the newest type of fertility drugs used in the infertility treatment of both men and women. Aromatase inhibitors were originally used in the treatment of breast cancer and prostrate cancer, but now have proven effective at increasing the chances of getting pregnant.

How Do Aromatase Inhibitors Function?

Aromatase inhibitors used in treating fertility problems are known as letrozole (Femara) and anastrozole (Arimidex). Femara and Arimidex function as an enzyme inhibitor. They prevent the enzyme aromatase from converting androgens (also known as the male hormones) into estrogen. High levels of estrogen in both men and women have been associated with illnesses. In women, exceeding levels of estrogencoupled with insufficient levels of progesterone often lead to female fertility problems, such as:

In men, high levels of estrogen are found in men who suffer from fertility problems such as, low sperm count and abnormal testosterone levels. And as well as in men who have prostrate cancer.

Aromatase Inhibitors: Treating Female Fertility

Aromatase inhibitors like Femara help female fertility by inducing ovulation. Ovulation is triggered, when Femara lowers the level of estrogen. When the levels of estrogen drop, the production of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) increase, which both play an important role in the development of the follicle, and the release of the egg.

Studies looking at the effectiveness of aromatase inhibitors have found that this type of fertility treatment boosts a higher rate of clinical pregnancies than Clomid, the popular fertility drug used by women. Also, the pregnancy rates produced by aromatase inhibitors are comparable to those produced by the use of FSH injections. Femara like FSH injections help women ovulate, but costs much less than FSH treatments. Other findings showed that Femara carried a 5 percent risk of multiple births compared to most other fertility drugs that carry a 20 percent risk of multiple births.

Femara Helps Treat

Femara helps treat women who experience the following infertility conditions:

  • anovulation
  • ovulatory problems
  • unexplained infertility
