Checking on Your Fertility...Naturally

Infertility is a very difficult issue, and one that plagues many couples each year. Before going to a fertility specialist, however, there are a number of natural steps that a couple should take. First, they should give themselves six months to try to conceive using ovulation detection kits. Should this not produce results, there are a number of other natural fertility ideas to explore before resorting to medical intervention.

1. Look for Low Progesterone

A simple blood or saliva test can detect if you have low progesterone. There are many topical progesterone creams and natural progesterone suppositories that can help to reverse this problem, should you find that you have a hormone imbalance.

2. Acid Issues

If a female has too much acid in her system, this can kill the sperm that is trying to fertilize the egg. Go to a drug store and purchase Ph paper strips to look at your acid levels. If you find that you do have too much acid, discuss your options with your doctor to correct this issue.

3. Blood Sugar Issues

A blood sugar imbalance can keep your body from getting pregnant. A simple blood test can evaluate your blood sugar level and tell you if this may be an issue. Your fasting blood glucose level should be between 85 and 100.

4. Thyroid Issues

Many women have thyroid issues that they don't know about. Have your doctor do a blood test to check your thyroid levels. They should focus on thyroid stimulating hormone levels to rule out thyroid problems which might inhibit conception.

5. Substance Use

Be honest with yourself about your alcohol and marijuana use. While no research has pinpointed exactly how much alcohol will make you infertile, the rule of thumb should be to avoid it altogether if you are trying to conceive. Pot smoking has been found to reduce fertility in both men and women and it may even cause abnormal changes in sperm as they come together with the woman's egg. Avoid marijuana completely when trying to conceive!

6. Nutrition Issues

A deficiency in vitamins can seriously hurt your chances of getting pregnant. A deficiency in protein or B-12 has been known to cause infertility and miscarriage. A deficiency of zinc and selenium in men can lead to sterility. Make sure that you are eating well and go to a nutritionist or doctor if you think that you may be deficient in certain nutrients. Women who are trying to conceive should take a prenatal multivitamin.

7. Gluten Issues

Gluten intolerance, believe it or not, can cause infertility. There have been a few studies that have shown that a completely gluten-free diet has helped some couples to conceive.

8. Stress

While you can't completely banish stress from your life, it is certainly a contributing factor in infertility. Try to find ways to release your stress through yoga, walking, water aerobics, and other activities. Communicate your feelings with your partner and take this journey towards conception together. The more stress that you remove from your life, the more you open yourself up to conception. This is certainly easier said than done, but it really can make a difference.

It is certainly worth trying these natural fertility methods before getting medical intervention. Certainly, if they don't work, you may need to consult a specialist. It's always worth while to try something less invasive, less expensive, and less time consuming before turning to the medical community for fertility help. Good luck!
