No menstration for almost 5 years

I breast fed my third child for about a year and a half, after which I never resumed my period. I did go back to my doctor and was told that it couldn't be anything serious - like ovarian cancer or anything - and if I wanted to I could take medication to restart my period... I wasn't really interested in that seeing as I wasn't looking to conceive :). My concern now is does this mean that now I can never have children again? I've just turned 40 as well so how will I even know that I'm beginning menopause seeing as that is one of the events that pretty much screams menopause... :) Any further information would be nice since all my internet searches aren't bringing up relevant information and my old doctor has left family practice leaving me with someone new and I'm just not entirely comfortable. Thanks.

There is a blood test that can indicate if you are in menopause.
