prescribed BC pills for pain--no exam

I have a family history of fibroids, both my mom and grandma had hysterectomies because of them. I have had lower diffuse abdominal pain around the time of ovulation that has gotten increasingly worse month to month. I went to the doctor today and he said it's "normal" for my age (38) and prescribed me birth control pills to normalize my hormones. I haven't had an exam in three years and he told me to come back in a couple of months for a pap smear. Is it just me or was I just totally ignored? Was it unrealistic to expect an exam of some type?
