Plastic Surgery: Rhinoplasty

When it comes to plastic surgery, there are minor procedures such as the mini facelift, and then there are more invasive procedures such as liposuction and breast augmentation. Among these more commonly performed and yet relatively invasive surgery procedures is Rhinoplasty-- also known as the nose job. While cosmetic surgery can be used as reconstructive surgery following an injury, an accident, or to help certain medical complications, it is often used as a beauty procedure in order to improve an individual's appearance. But what are some of the dangers of plastic surgery? And who are the best candidates for rhinoplasty?

The Procedure: What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that involves nose surgery. A plastic surgeon will typically make incisions either inside the nostrils or along the septum between the nostrils of the nose. Rhinoplasty involves the readjustment of bone and cartilage beneath the skin, and this will take place through the incisions.

The type as well as the amount of adjustments that will be made in a given nose job largely depends on each case. The surgeon will begin by separating the skin from underlying bone, cartilage, and mucous membranes before making adjustments which may involve cutting, trimming, or augmenting the nasal bones and cartilage. Cartilage found in the deeper areas of the nose or ear, implants, and bone grafts are among the various sources used when augmenting the nose to build a new shape.

Benefits of Plastic Surgeries: Nose Jobs

Rhinoplasty can have several different benefits when it comes to reconstructing the nose. These include straightening the bridge, shaping the tip of the nose, reducing or enlarging the size of the nose, and changing the slant in the region between the nose and upper lip. These changes can significantly alter the appearance of the face and are aimed at improving these features.

Rhinoplasty has been used to repair injuries of the nose as well as repairing birth defects and breathing complications.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure: What to Expect

The cost of rhinoplasty will typically range between $3,000 and $8,000.

Rhinoplasty will require a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon in order to ensure that the patient meets certain health criteria and is an appropriate candidate. This will involve a physical examination that will include a blood test and an inspection of the inside of the nose. Your medical history will also be assessed and you will be asked questions about the reasons behind your decision to undergo rhinoplasty. Your plastic surgeon will then explain what a nose job can do for you, and provide you with information as to whether or not the surgery can help you achieve your goal.

Prior to rhinoplasty, you will be asked to avoid certain things such as common pain medications, make-up or facial cosmetics such as creams, and the sun. These conditions can cause serious and unpleasant permanent damage such as bleeding and discoloration of the skin.

The rhinoplasty procedure will usually take between one to three hours. You will be placed under either local or general anesthesia either by an injection through the nasal tissues, inhalation of the analgesic, or through an intravenous (IV) line.

Once the surgery is complete, you will be monitored in the recovery room for any complications. An overnight stay in a hospital is commonly required.
