Oh no… Dandruff! Now What?

Dandruff, the flaky dead skin snowing down on your shoulders can be embarrassing. But it doesn't have to be. Dandruff is a common condition that affects one in every two people globally. But, it's also treatable. Giving you no reason for dandruff to stop you from wearing your favorite black top or parting your hair the way you like it. So, don't let dandruff dull your hairstyle, find out what hair products and how to get rid of severe dandruff that stands between you and those trendy hair styles.

What Causes Dandruff?

Our skin, from the skin on our scalp to our toes, sheds once a month. So, every 28 days we get a new layer of skin. But, we barely notice the process, as it is very gradual. So, where does the stubborn snowfall of dandruff come from? Well, our skin also produces sebaceous oils that microorganisms like bacteria and fungi feed off. A type of fungus called malassezia fungus is found on our scalp and feeds of the oil on our scalp's skin. Dandruff happens when the malassezia fungus goes haywire for reasons still unknown and increases its consumption of sebaceous oil, leaving the scalp irritated and dry. When this happens, the skin sheds a lot faster. So, instead of shedding dead skin once a month, the shedding happens in less than two weeks or faster. As well as, the oil our hair follicles release, causes the excessive dead skin to clump together producing the bane of our existence – dandruff.

Dandruff Treatment

How can you stop the flakes from falling? Simple and proper hair care can do the trick. The best way to eliminate the flakes is by shampooing your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo. Anti-dandruff shampoos containing zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid or ketoconazole as the active ingredients are you're best antidote to flakes. From preventing your scalp from becoming immune to anti-dandruff shampoos, change shampoo brands at least once a month.
